For All Brands of Networks

  1. All workstations and fileservers should use the same version of DOS (DOS version 3.1 or greater is required.)

  2. Disable any Video RAM, Shadow RAM, ROM BIOS Caching/ Shadowing, and CPU Caching in the CMOS setup on fileservers. Use of any of these may cause the network to run slower in an attempt to standardize communication speed.

  3. If you are using QEMM or 386MAX with DOS 5.0+, your CONFIG.SYS file must not use DOS = UMB or DEVICE = EMM386.SYS or DEVICE = HIMEM.SYS.

  4. When running a Novell Network with workstations that have Windows for Workgroups installed, these workstations must only be setup for Novell as the network. Windows for Workgroups, if given the chance, will setup itself as the primary network and Novell as the secondary network, which is inadvisable. The best way to setup the workstations for the Novell network is to make sure Windows for Workgroups is set to No Network. Then run the Novell Client Installation from DOS and install Windows support.
